Life is fair...

Question: "Why does life seem so cruel and unfair? Is it fair that people suffer?"

Answer: "This question is one of the basic questions in life. As you live and experience your life, you inevitably face cruelties of life, such as diseases, wars, hunger, "you father loosing a job", death of a loved one and so on. The funny thing is, that most of the people actually don't focus on this question, but just sort of let it go unanswered. I, however, can't let this question go unanswered, because if there is something unfair in this world, there is no reason to live, there is no reason to do good deeds and to be nice to each other, because if something unfair happens just once, you can never know when it will happen again. But as you observe your life and as you observe the world, you realize that everything is governed by the law of cause and effect, which means that if you break a cup full of tea, the tea will be poured all over the place and if you kill someone, he will die. These are just two simple examples, but everywhere you look, everything that happens, happens for a reason. As I said earlier, if just once something happened without a cause, you could never be sure when it will happen again and the whole concept of justice would fail.

If this is so (and the tea from a broken cup always spills on the floor), our lives and our world is governed by justice and fairness, because everything that happens in our lives and in our world, has a cause. Now, the question was good - "life SEEMS so cruel...", but in reality the whole concept of cruelty is actually based on the fact, that something is happening to someone for no reason! So yes, life seems cruel, but if you look beyond the observed moment (of someone loosing a job for example), you realize that only one's actions in the past could have lead to the current situation - this is the law of cause and effect in practice. For example, if I yell at my boss, I will probably get fired - but this situation would be so cruel and unfair to someone who wouldn't know that I yelled at my boss. Now all we have to do, to understand all various situations in life, is to expand the understanding of the law of cause and effect to every single situation and beyond this current life. Now, if you killed someone in this or in your previous life, this action is going to have certain effects. This is basically the law of karma - what you sow, you will reap. Without this law of karma, our lives would be unfair and justice wouldn't exist. How can you explain that someone is born without a leg or is born in Africa with nothing to eat?? If there would be no previous actions that lead to this situation, there would be unfair suffering of those people and if just one person suffered without a reason, NOTHING would be truly fair anymore. If you kill someone in this life and manage to get away, you still are going to eat the fruits of your actions. Only if you truly realize this simple fact, you realize that it cannot be any different with other "less significant" actions. Now I ask you: "How can anything be unfair?"

If you look at life, nature, people, ... nothing can never be unfair!

I disagree. Life is not fair! But here's the thing - it is unfair to our great advantage!

We regularly receive so many gifts and blessing in life that we do nothing to earn or deserve. Yet the only time we speak of fairness is when things do not go our way.

If a stranger hands us $1,000 as a free gift, we are grateful and happy, but we do not consider that it's not fair. If another stranger steals the $1,000 away, then we complain "it's not fair".

Cause and effect are definitely there. But a life that is based on love and forgiveness, transcends the laws of karma and fairness.

We are actually saying the same thing, but talking on two different levels here.

One level is a description of life and death - how life and death works - and in this sense everything IS fair, because of a simple law: "You reap what you sow" or in other words "the law of Karma". Fairness is here not meant in the simple sense of a stranger giving us money or taking it away from us - this is something that SEEMS fair or unfair, but actually ain't neither! The real fairness in life comes only from the the law "You reap what you sow!", which works in the background and is usually not easily seen. In this sense, life is fair!

The other level is the one of human life and how we should live it!

On this level, you have a very good point there. Love and forgiveness are, apart from self-realization, the most important things every being should follow and they should be above anything else in our lives, because they lead towards happiness and ultimate good.

Planetarium, thank you for your response! I always enjoy a good conversation.

I appreciate your points, but I kindly disagree.

For is it not love and forgiveness that lead to neh-karma and salvation (rising above the cycle of life and death)?

Michael, I too appreciate your comments very much and am happy to be able to talk to you.

Again, I have to say that I completely agree with you:

As I've said in my previous comment: "Love and forgiveness are, apart from self-realization, the most important things every being should follow and they should be above anything else in our lives, because they lead towards happiness."

And as you've correctly added - only love and forgiveness can get you out of this constant cycle of living and dying.

The important thing: living a pure life of real love, compassion and forgiveness is something that every religion teaches and it will certainly bring happiness and joy in one's life.

Planetarium, I completely agree! :-)

I completely agree and believe strongly in Karma! Your actions in life cause a reaction and the sooner we all understand this the quicker we will all live more authentic lives. Great post !
